The Work of Local Authorities
Still from 'Local Government' - Taken from 'Films of Britain 1946'
'A simple description of English Local Government, showing the areas into which England is divided, the system of election and finance, and the many services administered by the local authorities. An important service is public health.'
[sic? - see below]
Production Company: Signet Pictures Corp. Ltd./ Guild Films
Sound Recording: -
Story by: William Lewis
Length: 35mm: 1909ft. 16mm: 764ft.
There is some dispute as to the spelling of the director's name. Listed in the title credits as 'Bernerd', much of the online information on his calls him 'Bernard'. TIME/IMAGE is inclined to believe 'Bernerd' is the correct version, given other written sources of information, such as the
British Film Library Catalogue, Vol.2, Non-Fiction Film 1888-1994 (2001 Edition)
, page 343.
The title credits also list 'Signet Pictures Corp. Ltd.' as the producers of this title, whilst the
Films of Britain
booklets consistently list the producers as 'Guild Films'.
In the opening shots of Ealing is one of the Eldred Sayers & Son department store on Ealing Broadway - this was bought out by Bentall in 1949 (now with stores in Kingston and Bracknell) and was later demolished to become the Arcadia shopping centre that stands there today.
Whilst the opening shots are set in the London borough of Ealing, the town hall featured in the film is the former Wallington Town Hall, which is in the London borough of Sutton.
